I, Jan Giunta of Source One Financial, am a mortgage broker who specializes in residential financing for adult care providers.  I urge all providers to VOTE and to vote for WSRCC, the organization that has and will continue to represent YOU.  WSRCC has earned your vote.  WSRCC has represented the interests of adult care providers for about 14 years.  I have been associated with WSRCC as a benefactor for over 10 years; and have attended their Council board meetings, chapter meetings, and met and talked with individual members many, many times over the years, and been a very involved benefactor.  I have never (and I mean never) heard or seen any representative of WSRCC (all AFH providers themselves) say or act in a way that was not in or for the best interests of adult care providers in Washington.  The overarching aim of the Association and its representatives is to promote and support the efforts of YOU-an adult care provider.   Over the years there have been many achievements because of the efforts of these dedicated volunteers:  successful legislative lobbying to increase Medicaid reimbursement rates, increase in educational opportunities and standards, advocacy throughout the State on behalf of providers with many groups and individuals such as senior groups and DSHS,  providing important information to providers through the chapters, and recently the passage in the State Senate of delegation of nursing tasks for care of persons with diabetes (this has taken years of work, persistence and professionalism to get this through the Senate).  These dedicated volunteers have spent countless hours with no paycheck for their efforts to represent and improve the adult care home industry.

I think the idea of getting the adult family homes organized is exciting and will ultimately benefit their residents. As I mentioned, I am now personally involved with an adult family home since it became necessary for my Mother to move from her independent living situation. I am humbled by the work this home does. The residents have complex needs, some have dementia, and I feel totally secure that my Mom’s needs are being met (and I am a picky customer!). The staff is lovely, patient, curious about learning about my Mom’s specific health care needs, and always accommodating.

That said it is very important that adult family homes, as a provider group, have a strong voice in Olympia. I hope your members will take the time to study and understand the issue of collective bargaining for adult family homes and recognize the benefits of organizing. It is in everyone’s interest for adult family homes to have competitive rates within the system of providers that makes up the long term care network of this State. Your sector needs the added leverage that only can be gained through collective bargaining. I hope your members will vote and make their voices heard in the coming election.
